Albertplatz
Albertplatz is a square in the Dresden Neustadt where Hauptstraße and Königstraße meet, with two fountains by Robert Diez that were first turned on in 1894.
What it is
The square was laid out in the first half of the 19th century.
It also has an artesian well: its water rises under its own pressure from a depth of 243 metres in a slate-roofed well house on Antonstraße.
History
When the square's gardens were redesigned in 1875, two large basins with simple jets were built on either side.
The two fountains, "Stille Wasser" (Still Waters) and "Stürmische Wogen" (Stormy Waves), were designed by the sculptor Robert Diez, who won a competition held in 1880.
Their figure groups were cast in bronze at the Bierling foundry, and the fountains were first turned on on 1 September 1894.
They were paid for from the Dr. Güntz foundation.
A Soviet memorial was unveiled on the square on 25 November 1945, and in 1994 it was moved.
