Altmarkt

The Altmarkt is a large rectangular market square that has been the core of Dresden's town plan since the city was founded.

What it is

The Kreuzkirche stands on the south-east side of the square. The Kulturpalast, completed in 1969, closes the north side.

The residential and commercial buildings on the east and west sides are listed monuments. They have sandstone and render facades in historicising forms.

History

The square was first mentioned in a document in 1370, as "circulus". Markets, festivals, tournaments and games were held on it through its history.

Rebuilding of the square began in 1953. The buildings on its east and west sides date from the 1950s rebuilding.

Seeing it

Checked 11 October 2026 The city says the square is used for seasonal markets and events, among them the spring and autumn markets. Each Advent the Dresdner Striezelmarkt, the city's Christmas market, is held on the Altmarkt. Check the operator's own page before you go.
