Dresden Hauptbahnhof

Dresden Hauptbahnhof, opened in 1898 to replace the Böhmischer Bahnhof, combines a terminus and a through station under a membrane roof designed by Foster + Partners.

What it is

Deutsche Bahn uses the German name, Dresden Hbf or Dresden Hauptbahnhof, on its English station page too. The station is at Wiener Platz 4. Its pages on bahnhof.de are published by DB InfraGO AG, the Deutsche Bahn company that runs its stations.

Its tracks and platforms are on two levels. The Hauptbahnhof is a listed monument.

History

The station opened in 1898 and replaced the Böhmischer Bahnhof (Bohemian Station). It was rebuilt to designs by Foster + Partners, which covered the historic steel train sheds with a translucent membrane roof. The renovation began in 2000, and the membrane roof was completed in 2006.

After ice and snow damaged the roof in the winter of 2010/11, Deutsche Bahn began renewing the membrane in 2022. The renewed roof was inaugurated on 17 November 2025.

The building

The train shed has three aisles, with the entrance building set in front of the middle one. A dome and side towers mark the main front. A sculpture group with the figure of Saxonia crowns the main entrance.

On the north side stands the so-called King's Pavilion (Königspavillon). Deutsche Bahn says the royal house received state guests there.

The roof is a Teflon-coated glass-fibre membrane, 0.8 mm thick, that lets daylight into all the halls.

Seeing it

Checked 11 October 2026 The city calls the station a central point of the Dresden rail network, linking the lines towards Prague, Nuremberg, Leipzig, Berlin and Görlitz. ICE, EC and IC trains stop here, and the S-Bahn line S2 runs from here to Dresden Airport. Check the operator's own page before you go.
