Saxon State Parliament

The Sächsischer Landtag, the Saxon State Parliament, meets in a group of buildings on the bank of the Elbe in Dresden's old town: an older building built as a tax office and a new building with the plenary hall.

What it is

The older building was built in the Bauhaus style. The new building with the plenary hall was designed by the architect Peter Kulka.

History

From 1953 to 1990 the former tax office housed the Dresden city leadership and the Dresden regional leadership of the SED. The Landtag was constituted on 27 October 1990 and met in the Dreikönigskirche from 1990 to 1992.

Building began on 1 October 1991, the foundation stone of the plenary hall was laid on 19 May 1992, and the new building was completed on 12 February 1994. The old building was converted between 1 February 1995 and 28 February 1997, and it holds the offices of the parliamentary groups and the administration.

The new building has been a listed cultural monument since September 2023, and the old building is listed too.
