Neue Synagoge Dresden

The Neue Synagoge is the synagogue of the Jewish Community of Dresden at Hasenberg 1, consecrated on 9 November 2001 close to the site of the synagogue designed by Gottfried Semper that the Nazis burned down in November 1938.

What it is

Together with its community centre, the synagogue forms a complex on the eastern edge of the old town near the Elbe.

History

Dresden's earlier synagogue, designed by Gottfried Semper, was consecrated on 8 May 1840. It was burned down by the Nazis in the pogrom night of 9 to 10 November 1938. The ruin was removed soon afterwards, and some of its stones were used for road building. A Star of David from the old synagogue survived and is the only original piece of it that was saved.

The present synagogue was consecrated on 9 November 2001, close to the site of the old one.
