Neustädter Markthalle

The Neustädter Markthalle is a market hall on Metzer Straße in the Dresden Neustadt, first opened in 1899 and still home to traders today.

What it is

The hall is owned and run by Konsum Dresden.

It is a long Historicist building with an elaborately decorated façade and its original fittings, and it is a listed monument.

History

The hall first opened in 1899.

It was built of sandstone on the site of a demolished infantry barracks.

Dresden's market halls, built at the end of the 19th century, replaced the weekly open-air markets, which ended in 1893.

From 1949 the hall was run by the Konsum cooperative, which opened a 1,000-square-metre self-service shop in it in 1967.

A later renovation enlarged the gallery and turned the basement into sales space.

Seeing it

Checked 11 October 2026 An art, antiques and flea market is held in the hall on Saturdays in the winter season, with some extra Sundays. Check the operator's own page before you go.
