Pfunds Molkerei
Pfunds Molkerei is the shop of the Dresdner Molkerei Gebrüder Pfund, a dairy founded in 1880, at Bautzner Straße 79 in the Dresden Neustadt; its walls and floor are covered in hand-painted tiles from Villeroy & Boch.
What it is
The shop belongs to a dairy founded by the brothers Paul and Friedrich Pfund.
The building is a listed monument.
The tiles
The tiles came from the art department of Villeroy & Boch's earthenware factory in Dresden.
The majolica tiles show dairy scenes, mythical creatures and floral ornament in the Neo-Renaissance style.
The tiled surfaces cover almost 248 square metres.
History
The tiled shop opened in the autumn of 1892.
In 1972 the firm was expropriated and became the state-owned VEB Dresdner Molkerei; production stopped in 1978.
The larger part of the dairy's production buildings was later demolished, but the shop was saved.
When the shop was restored, only about five per cent of the tiles had to be replaced, and Villeroy & Boch made the missing ones at its Mettlach works.
