Standseilbahn

The Standseilbahn is a funicular railway that has run from Loschwitz up to Weißer Hirsch in Dresden since 1895 and is operated by the Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe.

What it is

The railway starts from Körnerplatz in Loschwitz and climbs to the upper station in Weißer Hirsch. The upper station is 95 metres higher than the lower one.

The line is 547 metres long and the ride takes 5 minutes. Two cars joined by a cable run on the line, and a stationary hoisting machine drives them.

History

The line was meant at first to connect the city centre with the newly founded villa district of Weißer Hirsch, which had become a spa district after a sanatorium was built. The railway is a listed monument, and DVB gives 1984 as the year it was listed.

On the way up

On the way up the railway passes through two short tunnels and over a viaduct 102 metres long.

The upper station is the starting point for walks through the villa district of Weißer Hirsch and has a view over the Elbe valley and Dresden.
